Privacy / Measurement

What this site keeps,
and what it never asks for.

What The Chocolate Atlas stores on your device, what audience measurement it uses, how measurement cookies are handled in your region, and how to change or remove anything.

There is no account, no reader database and no advertising on this site. Everything you create here stays in your own browser.

The short version

Your tasting journal, your course progress and your theme choice are stored on your device and are never transmitted to us. Advertising signals are switched off for every reader in every country, and measurement cookies are off by default across the EEA, the UK and Switzerland. Nothing you type — journal entries, search text, notes — is ever sent to an analytics provider.

On your device

Local storage, in full

These four keys are the complete list. Clearing site data for this domain removes all of them, and the tasting journal has its own export and delete controls.

Everything The Chocolate Atlas writes to your browser
KeyWhat it holdsHow long it lasts
atlas-themeWhich of the two reading themes you chose.Until you clear site data.
chocolate-atlas-course-progress-v1Which lessons you have marked complete.Until you clear it, or use “Clear progress” on the course pages.
chocolate-atlas-journalYour tasting journal entries: bar, maker, percentage, ratings and your own notes.Until you delete entries or clear site data.
atlas-analytics-consentYour explicit measurement-cookie choice, if you made one. Absent until you use the control below.Until you change it below or clear site data.

None of this is readable by us. If you want a copy of your journal, use the export controls on the journal page; the file is written by your own browser and is never uploaded.

Audience measurement

Google Analytics 4,
and what it is allowed to keep.

This site uses Google Analytics 4 to understand which pages are read and which are ignored. Advertising storage, ad personalisation and ad-user-data sharing are denied for every reader, in every country, on every request — this site sells nothing and has no advertising relationship to feed. Free-form text — search queries, journal fields, notes — is deliberately excluded from every event.

Measurement cookies are set by default according to where you are reading from. Across the EEA, the United Kingdom and Switzerland, analytics storage is set to denied before the tag loads: Google receives a page request without setting the _ga or _ga_<id> cookies and without a persistent identifier for you, which gives us modelled totals rather than individual journeys. Elsewhere, analytics storage starts granted and the control below is how you switch it off.

Whichever region you are in, an explicit choice you make below overrides that default in both directions and is remembered on this device until you change it or clear site data.

Google acts as our processor for this data and may process it outside your country. Where measurement cookies are allowed, the identifier persists for up to two years unless you withdraw it or clear site data.

Your setting

Change measurement on this device

This preference is stored in your own browser, applies only to this device and browser, and can be reversed at any time.

Current setting on this device: no choice saved, so the default for your region applies — switched off in the EEA, the UK and Switzerland, allowed elsewhere.

Prefer not to decide? Leaving it alone keeps the default for your region. Choosing Switch measurement cookies off is the private option anywhere in the world, and it takes effect immediately.
