† FAO estimate rather than a reported national return. The repeating, perfectly round values in those rows are the signature of an estimate and should not be read to the nearest tonne.
Three reasons two cocoa tables disagree
Most published contradictions about cocoa volumes are not errors. They are different instruments measuring different things, reported without saying so.
Calendar year is not cocoa year
Everything here is a calendar year. The International Cocoa Organization reports a cocoa year running October to September, so an ICCO figure labelled 2023/24 straddles two columns of this table. Neither series is wrong and they must not be mixed inside one comparison.
Production is not export, grind or consumption
This measures beans harvested in a country. It does not say where they were fermented, exported, processed into liquor and butter, or eaten. A country can grow little and grind a great deal — that is a different dataset and a different question.
Some figures are estimates
Where a national statistical return is unavailable, FAO estimates. Those rows carry real uncertainty, and a chart that renders them at the same visual confidence as an audited return is quietly overstating what is known.
